The Indianapolis Colts have signed free-agent K Matt Stover, the team announced Wednesday. In anticipation of the move, the Colts waived DT Ed Johnson on Tuesday, a league source indicated.

Stover worked out for the Colts on Tuesday, a source said and starting K Adam Vinatieri (knee) could miss several weeks.

The move to release Johnson is surprising considering he's a starter. However, Johnson was waived last season due in part to off-the-field issues. With Johnson gone, that will give second-round pick Fili Moala a chance to get into the rotation at defensive tackle.
