Jam at the Joe

Running backs Centarius Donald from Caldwell and Carlos Wilson from Ruston were the two headliners coming into Friday night’s Jamboree inside Joe Ailletg Stadium.

After a Calvary punt return for a touchdown early in the game, Centarius Donald answered with a long touchdown of his own. The 6’2” senior running back took the ball over 80 yards to the house. Weather delayed the game and Donald didn’t get a lot of chances to run the ball. He ran well against a young Calvary defense. I would have liked to have seen him run over more defenders; he seemed to go down quickly on a couple of plays. However, you don’t run for over 2,000 yards as a junior without being a tough runner.

Calvary has a young team this year, but they do have prospects to keep an eye on. Sophomore quarterback Nik McCarty, sophomore receiver Jonathan Shepherd, and sophomore running back Brandon Wilson should develop into very good players by year’s end.

Farmerville just had too much speed for Cedar Creek. Senior Depaul Elliot was all over the field for the Farmers. Elliot returned the opening kick for a touchdown and also shared in the running back duties. On defense, Elliot made life rough for the Cedar Creek receivers, keeping them from getting into their routes. Elliot had an interception as well.

Cedar Creek did find success once against Elliot. Quarterback Jordan Scelfo threw a deep pass just over Elliot’s fingertips and the Cougars were able to turn the play into a touchdown. Cedar Creek has been a good time for a few years now and Scelfo will get that offense going.

Defense was the key in the Ruston game against Minden. The Bearcats have very tall, athletic defense ends. Seniors Damian Morris, Phillip McClain, and junior Mason Dean all stand at least 6’4”. McClain was in the Minden backfield constantly. Quinton Crowe, a 6’2” 230 pound linebacker, might be Ruston’s best overall prospect. Crowe showed good quickness and awareness and made several nice plays.

On offense, Carlos Wilson had two touchdowns, including one from over 70 yards early in the game. Wilson and the Bearcats scored three touchdowns in the first half and the defense did the rest by posting a shutout.
