Brown Signs Free Agent Contract; Keagle Receives Invite to Mini-Camp
RUSTON --
Louisiana Tech
corner back
Weldon Brown
ended his college career in dream-like fashion, earning the Defensive MVP Award while leading the Bulldogs to a 17-10 victory in the 2008 Independence Bowl in his hometown of Shreveport.
On Monday, Brown began process to fulfilling another long-time dream as he signed a free agent contract to play with the
Jacksonville Jaguars
of the National Football League. “All of my hard work has paid off,” Brown said Monday. “I really want to thank the Jaguars organization for this opportunity. I just want to go out there and showcase my talents and hopefully prove that I can contribute to the team. I believe I can help them.”
Brown, who has to report to Jacksonville on Thursday, saw action in 45 games during his Bulldog career, recording 166 tackles, nine interceptions, 23 pass break ups and four fumble recoveries.
The former Bossier High School product was also instrumental on numerous LA Tech special teams units, totaling more than 1,200 yards on 54 career kick returns. He also scored his lone collegiate touchdown on a blocked field goal return in a win over Southeastern Louisiana in 2008.
In addition to Brown’s signing, former Bulldog punter
Chris Keagle
received an invitation to the Green Bay Packer’s mini-camp where he will compete for a free agent contract. “Green Bay invited two punters to their mini-camp which starts Thursday,” Keagle said. “It’ll be a good competition. It’ll either be good job Chris, here’s a contract, or good job other guy and good-bye Chris. Hopefully, I’ll do well and earn a spot with the team.”
Keagle is a two-time all-WAC performer who started for four years for the Bulldogs. During his college career, Keagle punted 266 times for a 39.6 yard per punt average.
However, over his final two years with the Bulldogs, Keagle earned first team All-WAC honors as a junior and second team All-WAC honors as a senior after averaging better than 40.0 yard per punt both years.
