Jones Named WAC Hitter of the Week
By
Louisiana Tech SID
Posted May 21, 2008
May 19, 2008 RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech outfielder Jericho Jones ended the 2008 season on a high note as he was named WAC Hitter of the Week by the Western Athletic Conference office on Monday.
Jones, a junior from Corinth, Texas, hit .524 (11-for-21) last week with 12 RBI, two home runs, two doubles, four runs scored and three stolen bases as the Bulldogs went 3-2 on the week with a non-conference win over UL-Monroe and a series split at
New Mexico State
.
He started the week with a 4-for-4, 5-RBI performance against the Warhawks in a 15-5 victory at J.C. Love Field. He then stayed hot in Las Cruces with a 3-for-5 effort in Friday's first game of a doubleheader and a 3-for-4, 4-RBI outing in the season finale on Sunday. Jones also pitched in two games during the week, striking out five batters in 6.1 innings of work.
Jones has been named WAC Hitter of the Week three times in his career. The first honor came on March 13, 2006, during his freshman season. He also earned the award once last year for his big weekend against McNeese State, which also earned him National Hitter of the Week accolades.
Earlier this year, the junior earned national recognition as Ping!Baseball's National Spotlight Player of the Week for his near-heroic performance in a doubleheader with
San Jose State
.
It marks the second time this season that a Bulldog has been awarded the conference's weekly honor. Senior first baseman
Albie Goulder
earned the award during the first week of the season for his performance against McNeese State. Fellow senior Alan Knotts was named Pitcher of the Week during Week 2 for his effort against Texas-Arlington.
Pitcher of the Week honors went to San Jose State's Max Peterson, who pitched a complete-game shutout against
Nevada
during the weekend.
For the year, Jones finished as the team leader in batting average at .364. He also had 13 home runs and 46 RBI to go along with a .611 slugging percentage and eight stolen bases.
