What comes next for Techsters?

Posted Mar 26, 2008

The Lady Techsters program is in an unsure situation while fans wonder what happens next.

Joni Crenshaw, Matt Insell, and Scott Stoehr are gone. Brooke Stoehr is left as the only full time coach left, but even her status is uncertain with the departure of her husband.

The Lady Techsters have a lot of talent coming back and even more on the way. Shanavia Dowdell and Tiawanna Pringle are juniors now and will be joined by Whitney Jones, the Baylor transfer who went down with an injury early in the season. Sophomores Adrienne Johnson, Brietta Thomas, Sidney Stewart, and Tarkisha Wysinger all made an impact as freshmen and will take on even larger roles now.

Incoming freshmen Jasmine Bendolph, Kiara Young, and DeAngela Sword will arrive on campus with a lot of awards and honors. The Alabama trio will add talent and depth to the guard rotation for Coach Long and really allow the team to work with different lineups.

With all the talent at guard, Dowdell and Johnson will be counted on heavily to hold down the front court. Senior Keisha Warren and junior college transfer Kim Jones will provide depth and sophomore center Kara Jones will likely help more after having a year in the system.

The players are in place, but who will coach them? Teresa Weatherspoon will be the featured speaker at the upcoming Techster Banquet. Could T-Spoon possibly be on the staff? Weatherspoon was the Head Coach of a minor league men's team this year.

Former Techsters Monica Maxwell and Catrina Frierson are both coaching at other schools in Louisiana. Frierson played for Coach Long in high school and the two arrived in Ruston at the same time. Either or both could also be candidates to fill vacant spots on the staff.

Despite all the talk of the team needing to recruit a center, Coach Long really does have a talented team to work with. They might be undersized, but they have a lot of good players and Johnson and Dowdell can really play inside. No matter who the assistant coaches are, the pieces are in place to make a run at the WAC championship and to get back in the NCAA tournament.
