Strong batting, aggressive base running, and timely pitching propelled UTSA Baseball to a season-opening four game sweep of Air Force.
“It’s tough to beat anybody four times,” said Head Coach Jason Marshall. “It’s just hard to emotionally stay hooked in for that long. Saturday we were at the ballpark for 11 hours. That’s a mental and physical strain on your ballclub.”
While there were several tense moments throughout the series, UTSA had it’s way with Air Force winning 9-2; 6-1; 13-8; and 12-4. The Roadrunner offense was on fire all series, amassing a staggering 40 runs on 62 hits.
UTSA used nine different pitchers during the series. That was a function of pitchers being on an early season pitch count.
“We just want to proceed with caution with our starting arms,” said Marshall. “You could really pay the price at the end of the season if they over threw early in the season. You gradually get them there because those guys are precious commodities.”
While there was an upbeat attitude amongst the team Sunday following the series sweep, there wasn’t over-joy or excessive celebration.
“We want to prepare for the end of the season,” said Marshall. “We want to be our best when it gets down to the end. That means keeping the beginning in perspective. Our guys have high expectations this year. I think they see the potential in this club. They know they have what it takes to be a good ballclub.”
Outfielder Daniel Rockett led the way offensively going 10 for 15 in the series with 4 RBIs and a homerun. Infielder RJ Perucki also had a10 hit series going 10 for 19 with 4 RBIs.
UTSA next travels to Corpus Christi to face TAMUCC on Wednesday.
“You just have to go out and out-compete your opponent,” said Marshall. “That’s what the midweek game is all about. You go out and play as hard as you can regardless of who they are.”
Following that midweek matchup with the Islanders, UTSA starts a weekend series with Louisiana Lafayette.
“You have to look at it from the weekend to the midweek game. After the midweek game you restart,” said Marshall. “The grind starts, the competition is only going to get tougher. There are going to be some great challenges ahead.”
