Breakdown: Fresno State at Southern Illinois

Kevin Foster

Fresno State hits the road and takes part in its first ever MWC-MVC Challenge as the Bulldogs face Southern Illinois. Check inside for the breakdown…

PG: Allen Huddleston (6-2, 185, Jr.) vs. Kendal Brown-Surles (5-9, 174, Sr.)

Allen Huddleston continues to be Fresno State's leading scorer, thanks to his three-point shooting and knack of hitting shots down the stretch. Huddleston is still adjusting to the point guard position however, with a poor assist-to-turnover ratio of .8.

Advantage: Fresno State

SG: Kevin Olekaibe (6-2, 180, Jr.) vs. Anthony Beane, Jr. (6-2, 171, Fr.)

Anthony Beane, Jr. has stepped into a big role for Southern Illinois as a true freshman, averaging 10.8 points per game on 50% shooting. He'll be matched up against Fresno State's leader in the backcourt in junior Kevin Olekaibe, who looks to get more consistent coming off an elbow injury.

Advantage: Fresno State

SF: Tyler Johnson (6-2, 180, Jr.) vs. Jeff Early (6-1, 187, Sr.)

Jeff Early has been Southern Illinois's impact player through four games. At 6-foot-1, Early has recorded two double-doubles, averaging 19.3 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Tyler Johnson's athleticism will help him match up against Early.

Advantage: Southern Illinois

PF: Kevin Foster (6-8 230, Sr.) vs. Desmar Jackson (6-5, 173, Jr.)

Desmar Jackson is in his first season at Southern Illinois after transferring from Wyoming. Jackson had been Wymoing's leading scorer, ranking fifth in the Mountain West Conference at 14.6 points per game as a sophomore two years ago. Kevin Foster could be in for a big game against the undersized Southern Illinois frontcourt. Foster has averaged 11.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Advantage: Fresno State

C: Jerry Brown (6-7, 210, Jr.) vs. Dantiel Daniels (6-5, 230, So.)

Dantiel Daniels has worked his way back into the rotation for SIU after a groin injury. Daniels has averaged 9.3 points per game on 69% shooting in three games. Jerry Brown is averaging 5.6 points and 4 rebounds and comes off his best game of the season scoring 9 points and grabbing 8 rebounds against Long Beach State.

Advantage: Southern Illinois

Benches:

Fresno State 7-foot center Robert Upshaw could have a breakout game on Wednesday off the bench. Southern Illinois's only player over 6-foot-6 is Davante Dinkard who stands 6-foot-9, 234 lbs. Dinkard has played only 11.5 minutes per game.

Advantage: Fresno State

Coaches: Rodney Terry vs. Barry Hinson

Barry Hinson is in his first season as Head Coach of Southern Illinois. Hinson was previously Head Coach at Oral Roberts for two seasons and Missouri State for nine seasons, combining for a 205-140 career record and four postseason appearances.

Advantage: Southern Illinois

Intangibles:

Both Fresno State and Southern Illinois enter Wednesday's game coming off of a loss. It will be the first home game versus a division-one opponent for SIU this season. The Salukis will hope to take advantage of a long trip for Fresno State.

Advantage: Southern Illinois

Final Analysis/Prediction:

Fresno State leaves California for the second time this season with a 2-1 record on the road. Forward Kevin Foster and center Robert Upshaw take advantage of size mismatches while the Bulldogs' defense lowers Southern Illinois's 50% season shooting percentage from the field.

PREDICTION: Fresno State 68, Southern Illinois 61
