Ryan Higgins jumpstarted Louisiana Tech's '12 recruiting class in a big way this afternoon when he committed to the Bulldogs.

"This is by far the biggest day of my life," said Higgins, shortly after issuing a verbal pledge to head coach Sonny Dykes and his staff. "It's a huge step in my football career. I can't wait.

"I was almost there (committing) a couple of days ago. I arrived at my decision after talking things over with my (Hutto) coaches at our strength camp.

"They thought it was a great idea (to go ahead and commit). My coaches at Hutto like the coaches at Tech. Now that I have recruiting out of the way, I can go ahead and focus on my senior year."

How did the conversation go with the Tech staff?

"They were very excited," said Higgins. "When I first called, Coach Tommerdahl said Coach Dykes wasn't there, so I waited a little while and called back. I spent probably eight minutes talking with Coach Dykes and five with Coach Franklin.

"They said I'll have a great career at Tech. They also said that getting a good quarterback was their number one priority; my commitment should help build and get a roll started where we'll have more talent decide to go ahead and join the team."

As a junior, Higgins threw for more than 2,000 yards as he led the Hippos to a 9-2 mark and a district title -- only one year removed from a 2-8 season. It was Hutto's first district championship in 32 years.
