"It was a one-day camp at TCU yesterday," said Kavahra Holmes. "I had a vertical of 37 inches, a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash and a 4.05 shuttle.
"The coaches were impressed by my jump and my times. After that, I did well in both the position drills and the one-on-one drills. I didn't have any drops in the one-on-one drills. I executed my routes and was able to go up and get the jump balls."
When did TCU head coach Gary Patterson make the offer?
"At the end of the camp, Coach Patterson said, 'I'm not going to lie. I want you right now,'" recalled Holmes (6-1, 175, Sr.). "We stayed for an hour and a half after the camp.
"He told us his story and about his life. He gave us insight into what they've built at TCU. He did mention the success they've had in Louisiana, and he broke down the academic side of things.
"He explained how he's involved in everything. His house is only 30 seconds away from his office. He makes sure the players stay buckled down as students. He made my family and myself feel very comfortable and welcome. I already have a good relationship with their coaches."
TCU has made its presence felt in Louisiana over the past few years. The Horned Frogs haven't signed a large quantity of players from the Bayou State, but they've reeled in some big-time quality.
Patterson and his staff successfully recruited John Curtis Christian (River Ridge) LB Kenny Cain a couple of years ago. In February, the Horned Frogs signed stalwart West Monroe DT Chuck Hunter. Shortly after National Signing Day, they landed a verbal commitment from Hunter's former teammate, '12 DE James McFarland.
Will Holmes make a pledge soon?
"I'm not ready to make a decision yet," he said. "I'm going to look at some more schools. LSU - where I'm camping tomorrow - will always be my favorite, but TCU is also a favorite now."
Holmes posted the nation's second fastest time in the 400 meters this year (46.31) for Breaux Bridge, which won the Class 4A state championship in track and field. Arman Hall (St. Thomas Aquinas, FL) has the top time (46.22).
Last year, Holmes caught 25 passes and scored six touchdowns for the Tigers. His cousin, Crowley RB Davante' Bourque, is committed to Texas A&M. Holmes has two teammates - WR Travin Dural and RB/LB Lamar Louis - who are committed to LSU.
