Bracken Does it Big

Tyre Bracken

White Castle won the Class A state championship last year, largely behind the running of star running back Tyre Bracken. Read further to get the latest on Bracken's recruitment.

White Castle shocked most people in Louisiana last year by winning the Class A state championship. The Bulldogs entered the playoffs as a modest No. 15 seed, but that was somewhat deceptive.

All three of White Castle's losses came at the hands of larger schools (each of which made deep playoff runs): Riverside Academy, Donaldsonville, and Redemptorist.

The Bulldogs lose ATH Ronald Martin (QB/WR/DB) to graduation (signed with LSU), but RB Tyre Bracken (approximately 3,000 yards, 40 TDs) will return this fall for his senior season.

"It was tough for teams to stop both Ronald and me," recalled Bracken. "When Ronald got injured (near the end of the regular season), I knew the team would need me to do more. Our coach told me that I would have to step it up, and that's what I did."

In the semifinals, Bracken ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns in White Castle's shutout (20-0) of previously unbeaten Oberlin.

What's happening with Bracken's recruitment?

"I have an offer from Memphis," he said. "Coach (Galen) Scott is recruiting me for Memphis. He's told me about their new facilities. He says they're on the come up and that they're working hard. He wants me to come to their camp this summer and check out their campus. I'm going to make it up there.

"Louisiana Tech was at practice last week. Coach (Petey) Perot is recruiting me for Tech. He says they have an offer out there for me, but they want to see me at their camp before they make it official.

"Mississippi State is supposed to come this week, and Southern Miss is showing interest. I like LSU and Mississippi State. I also like Memphis. I haven't really found out much about Louisiana Tech yet. I need to see how I would fit into their offense; find out what type of offense they run."

Bracken has incredible upper body strength.

"The last time I maxed on bench press was awhile back," he said. "I did 355 then, but I think I can do a lot more now. My squat is 385 pounds. A running back needs strong legs, and I'm getting there with my lower body strength."

Bracken says he's been timed at 4.37 at a Florida camp.
