"I called Coach (Chris) Thurmond, who is the Rice recruiter for my area, and committed this morning," said Spencer Stanley, the outgoing junior from Trinity Valley HS. "I let him know I want to be a Rice Owl, and he was thrilled. He said they had just won the lottery.
"Rice really made me feel welcome. It's the place for me, and I have a great future there. I'm excited. When I made the decision to commit, it's for real. I won't be looking around at other schools. God wants me to be there at Rice."
What were the events that led up to Stanley's decision?
"Several weeks ago, I went to Rice's Junior Day and I loved what I saw," he explained. "The following week, they offered me.
"Two weeks ago, I took another visit to Rice with my parents. We took a look at things on a more in-depth level, and when I returned I prayed about it and then made my decision late last week."
With his recruitment now over, Stanley is focused on his upcoming senior season.
"Now I can focus my mind on our team," he said. "We have seven starters returning on each side of the ball, and we're really excited about the '11 season.
"It's going to be light's out!"
Rice recruited Stanley as an offensive lineman.
