For several months, O.P. Walker cornerback Cortez Johnson was committed to Southern Miss. Following an exceptional senior campaign, however, Johnson re-opened his recruitment after quite a few new programs began to show heavy interest and offer scholarships.
This weekend, Johnson took an official visit to Southern Miss and he spoke about that, as well as his plans for ultimately making a decision next week.
"Right now, Arizona is number one and Southern Miss is number two," Johnson said. "That's how it is until I take these last two visits (to Pittsburgh and Minnesota). I'm going to make my decision next Monday night at a party that we're probably going to throw at my house.
"I had a good time on the Southern Miss visit; it was alright. The coaches kept it real and told me what it's going to be. I like the coaches there as much as the coaches at any other school I'm interested in."
It appears that Pitt and Minnesota have a decent chance of eventually landing Johnson's signature.
"I can't judge those schools yet, because I haven't seen them," he said. "I'm going to Pitt next Wednesday and then I'm going to Minnesota on Friday. I just have to see how they operate there. I want playing time as a freshman, and I don't mind the (cold) weather, as long as I'm getting on the field."
Johnson has taken officials to Louisiana Tech, Arizona, and Southern Miss. How would he rate each visit?
"I'd give Arizona an 8, Southern Miss a 6 or 7, and Louisiana Tech a 6.5," he said. "I still have Tech in mind, but they're outside of my favorites."
Johnson's recruitment looks like it will go down to the wire, leading up to his announcement celebration in eight days.
