There's always a handful of prospects who seem to blow up on the recruiting scene close to NSD, and one Class of 2011 player who fits that mold is tall, physical CB Cortez Johnson from O.P. Walker. This weekend, Johnson took an official visit to Tech, and you can get his reaction to that, as well as find out which other schools are in the hunt to land his services.

"It was great up there," said Cortez Johnson when asked about his official visit this weekend to Louisiana Tech. "It was one of the best experiences I've ever had. I really liked the good people and the coaches. It was a good environment. It was like a home away from home."

"I hung out with Tyrone Duplessis and Kendrick James (both O.P. Walker grads) and some other guys, and it was a really good time with nice people."

What did the Tech coaching staff say to Johnson?

"They told me that I'm exactly what they need," he said. "They told me to think it over and make sure it's where I want to go, so I'm going to talk things over with my parents, and then we'll make the decision.

"My parents love Tech. Coach (Pierre) Ingram has been by the house and he made a good first impression. They (Tech) have a great shot at signing me. Oh yeah, they have a great shot."

Tech fans shouldn't get overly excited just yet, because Johnson is being heavily recruited by a handful of other programs, including Arizona, Minnesota, Southern Miss (where he originally commited), SMU, Utah, and Indiana.

"Next weekend, I'm visiting Arizona and the following weekend, it's going to be Minnesota. I'll visit Southern Miss for my last official.

"I haven't been hearing as much from SMU lately, but Utah has been coming on strong."

Whichever school is fortunate enough to land Johnson will get a corner with ideal height (in the 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-2 range) that has a knack for making big plays.

Johnson single-handedly saved the day for O.P. Walker in their quarterfinal slugfest with Bastrop, corraling Rams WR Jevante Watson near the goal-line -- as time expired -- to force the game into OT.

Johnson, for his exceptional season-long efforts, was named Class 4A first-team all-state and All-Metro (Greater New Orleans Area).
