Reed's racking up the numbers

Last night, Dutchtown continued its quest for a perfect season by knocking off a tough Hahnville squad, 13-10. RB Effrem Reed carried the mail and controlled the clock for the 8-0 Griffins, totaling 247 yards rushing and scoring both of his team's touchdowns.

Both Dutchtown and Hahnville came into last night's matchup with unblemished District 6-5A records, but only team emerged unscathed and that was Dutchtown, which was led once again by the powerful combination of RB Effrem Reed and QB Leon Blouin.

The Griffins (8-0, 3-0) emerged from the low-scoring River Parish brawl with a 13-10 victory and Reed did the vast majority of the damage, running for 247 yards and two TDs against an excellent Hahnville defense.

"We got off to a bad start," said Reed on Saturday afternoon. "We messed around too much in practice this week - with it being Homecoming - and lost our focus."

Nevertheless, Dutchtown regained that focus at the right time.

"Late in the game, you could tell that Hahnville's defense was getting frustrated and they started fighting amongst themselves. I called my teammates together and told them that we had to buckle down; that we can't do that."

True to form, though, Reed deflected the credit for his accomplishments away from himself.

"My offensive line did a great job of blocking; just like they've done all year," he said.

Next week, the Griffins will travel south a few dozen miles for the biggest game in Louisiana next Friday: Dutchtown vs. East St. John.

"This game will be for the district title," said Reed. "It's two 8-0 teams -- two top-ranked teams. They have an explosive offense and so do we.

"We're going to have to play mistake-free football. Their wide receiver, D'haquille Williams, is a man amongst boys."

Amazingly, Reed doesn't hold a scholarship offer to date, but he's been garnering interest from some new suitors.

"I'm talking a lot more with schools with as ULL and ULM," he said, "but nothing serious yet."

Reed's first touchdown against Hahnville -- an 86-yard burst up the middle -- was a fixture on news clips around the state last night.
