Scout's Take: Barbe/Acadiana

Two of the prominent Class 5A programs in Louisiana tangled Friday night when Barbe visited Acadiana. Scout gives you the rundown on the top prospects in the game, including a 6-foot-5 sophomore receiver who made a huge impact. Pictured is Acadiana RB/DB Micah Eugene, who ran for 122 yards and two TDs in the Rams' 35-14 win.

Acadiana defeated Barbe (35-14) last Friday and there were several talented prospects on the field, including Acadiana's Micah Eugene, Nick Smith, and Bakari Hollier; and Barbe's Desean Smith, Jared Foster, and Jarrett Rougeau.

Eugene and Hollier have similar physiques and skill sets. The pair are both in the 5-foot-10, 190-pound range, and they can both fly. Eugene is considered by some people to be a step faster, and he was at the top of his game on Friday night.

The speedy Acadiana duo are part of a large platoon of effective running backs in the rotation for the Rams' split-back veer offense, and Eugene was the workhorse versus Barbe, carrying 21 times for 122 yards and two TDs.

Eugene reaches optimum speed in a hurry and he's a spirited, excitable player who seems to always fall forward. Although he'll likely play defensive back in college, Eugene is an outstanding back on the prep football level.

On Friday, he would often appear to be at a standstill in the midst of a group of tacklers, but the senior would frequently pick up two-to-five additional yards with his leg drive and quick feet. Eugene did much of his running between the tackles, but he certainly has the wheels to turn the corner.

Hollier has also been a weapon at RB for Acadiana this year, but he spent the lion's share of his time in the secondary vs. Barbe's spread offense. Both Hollier and Eugene emerge quickly their respective backpedals and close in on a receiver that is breaking off a short route.

Each has some room to improve as a defensive back, in terms of wrapping up better on tackles and avoiding the tangling of feet with receivers (which drew a flag on one play vs. Barbe).

Acadiana has a good offensive lineman in tackle Nick Smith, a 6-foot-4, 290-pounder who is committed to local program UL. Smith appears very lean for his size and should be able to pack on a significant amount of muscle during the college career.

He's already an intimidating lineman, having racked up several pancakes against Barbe. Much of Eugene's yardage came right behind the blocking of Smith. While Acadiana runs a conservative veer offense, Smith does show the ability to pass block when afforded the opportunity (the Rams only attempted two passes on Friday).

The biggest surprise of the night was the play of Barbe sophomore tight end Desean Smith. A 6-foot-5, 220-pounder, Smith caught six passes for 92 yards and scored both of Barbe's touchdowns. He has soft hands and sufficient speed to get separation (against a very athletic Acadiana secondary).

Barbe QB Jared Rogers (6-foot-1, 185) completed 18-of-30 passes for 221 yards. Rogers has above-average velocity on his throws, but he is inconsistent on occasion. The senior placed a tough downfield throw on the money, then misfired on an easy short screen pass. Rogers did a nice job of working several receivers into the mix (at least four Barbe targets caught passes on the Bucs' opening drive).

Senior Jarrett Rougeau (5-foot-7, 160) has been a steady playmaker for Barbe during his career, but the receiver was held in check by Acadiana. Rougeau had 3 carries for 12 yards, but didn't manage a reception. He took a vicious hit early in the game, but bounced right up and appeared to be fine.
